Although they won rather more than the four points which Isabella Crossman and Olivia Quigley won in the first set the previous day, Emerson Jones and Elena Micic had the same undignified start to their doubles semi-final when fed a bagel by top seeds Monique Barry and Alana Parnaby. With most of the points ending in errors of some sort, there were only four winners that were really worth including in the highlights package, and all of them came from Barry.
The first was on just the second point, when she hit a beautiful overhead backhand volley, and it wasn’t until Micic was serving the fifth game that there was anything to add. There was a great rally on the first point, Barry finishing that with a fabulous angled backhand volley, and she hit a glorious forehand return down the tramlines two points later, off an admittedly slowish second serve. Her last standout came as Parnaby served for the set in the next game, with a lovely cross-court forehand volley to end a good short rally. Forced return errors by Jones and Micic gave the top seeds the set points, and Jones pulled a backhand wide on the first of those to end the set after 20 minutes.
The second set started with Jones and Micic holding serve for the only time in the match, Parnaby having hit a beautiful forehand volley to start Barry’s hold to love in the game between. It was a real shock to then see Parnaby broken to love, Jones starring with a fabulous backhand return down the tramlines. That, though, would become the first of six games in a row to go to the receivers. Jones was next, her final point seeing Micic forced to hit a backhand volley into the net. Jones started Barry’s second game with another fabulous backhand return down the tramlines, and the left-hander lost the game when she was forced into a forehand error.
Micic served consecutive double faults in the next game before losing a good short rally to an overhead volley from Barry, but at least she was able to get back to deuce when Parnaby hit forced and unforced errors. That was as far as she got, because Jones hit a poor overhead backhand volley into the net to lose the deciding point. Parnaby then hit four unforced errors to lose her serve, the last of those being her second double fault in the game. She went some way to making up for that with the shot of the match, a fabulous inside-out forehand return into the corner off Jones in the next game, and Barry completed the break with a cross-court backhand volley.
The sequence of losses finally stopped when Barry held to love for the second time, and her stunning inside-out forehand return off Micic created more break points. Jones saved the first with a much better overhead backhand volley than her previous effort, but Micic hit a backhand over the baseline to lose the game. That meant Parnaby was now serving for a place in the final, and a backhand return into the net from Micic gave away two match points. The best rally of the match came on the first of those, Barry being forced to hit a backhand volley into the net after 15 shots, but she converted the second chance with an easy forehand volley. The final score was 6-0, 7-5, and the match had lasted an hour and four minutes.
