The only New Zealander in action today was Kiranpal Pannu, who had his quarter-final in Saint-Augustin against Strong Kirchheimer. He had to save a break point on the way to holding serve after three deuces in the opening game, but that was the only success Pannu managed in the first set. He did have a game point when he served again, but managed only nine points in the last six games as Kirchheimer finished the set after 47 minutes by breaking Pannu’s serve again.
The second set started in a similar fashion, but with Kirchheimer serving. He had game points straight away at 40-15, but he had to save a break point after the first of what became five deuces. Pannu wasn’t able to hold serve even once, but he did break Kirchheimer’s serve in the third game. Again, though, Pannu got shut right out of the rest of the match, winning only four more points. The final score was 6-1, 6-1, and they were on court for an hour and 29 minutes.
