The first set was effectively over after Nam Ji-sung won the first four games in his first round qualifying match against Alex Klintcharov.  The New Zealander did break Nam’s serve in the eighth game, but Nam broke again straight away, this time to love, and held to love to finish the set after 28 minutes.  The second set didn’t see a break point until the seventh game, when Klintcharov had to save three before holding serve after two deuces.  He had to face three more in the longest game of the match, four games later, but couldn’t save the last one after Nam broke following the fourth deuce.

That left Nam serving for the match, but he could save only one break point before double faulting to send them to a tie-break.  Klintcharov lost his third point, but a double fault from Nam meant that they changed ends with the score level.  Any hope that Klintcharov had of winning the set was immediately snuffed out, as Nam worked his way through the next four points to complete the victory after an hour and 35 minutes.  The final score was 6-2, 7-6 (3).
