Gaby Dabrowski has shared on social media that she has been battling breast cancer since April, with surgeries and other treatment in these last eight months. We now know why Erin Routliffe had different partners through the European clay swing, and why Dabrowski missed the North American tournaments after the Olympics and her home Canadian Open. Knowing all of this, it is utterly amazing that Dabrowski was able to play well enough to not only reach the finals at Wimbledon and Toronto but to share with Routliffe the honour of beating the best field in the world to win the WTA Tour Finals doubles title in Riyadh. Whatever other sports stories about comebacks from injury and illness there have been in 2024 pale into insignificance beside this utterly amazing effort.
