19th seed Cameron Norrie will play Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru in the first round of the Australian Open. They have met once before, in Buenos Aires last February, where Norrie won a tight semi-final on clay in straight sets.
By qualifying yesterday with her victory over Zeynep Sönmez, Lulu Sun has become the first New Zealand-born woman in a main draw at a Grand Slam event for over 30 years. Whilst placements for qualifiers are not normally easy, Sun has at least avoided the second, fifth, sixth and seventh seeds! Her first round opponent will be Elisabetta Cocciaretto from Italy, currently ranked 45, but who has a career-high 29 in the recent past.
