What has to be some sort of record in a low-level doubles match happened when the only deuce in the quarter-final in Monastir came in the very last of the 24 games, with Matt Donald and Liam Gavrielides unable to convert either break point they had in that game after a terrifically close contest with top seeds Alexander Merino and Christoph Negritu.
The first six games went with serve before Merino and Negrito were the first to break, but Donald and Gavrielides broke back when the top seeds were serving for the set for the first time. Unfortunately they couldn’t continue the momentum, being broken to love next up before Merino and Negrito served out the set after 40 minutes.
The second set had just one break of serve, which came in the crucial eleventh game when Donald and Gavrielides again lost their serve at the worst possible time. They took Merino and Negrito to 30-40 in the final game, but the top seeds won both the next two points to finish the match after an hour and 21 minutes. The final score was 7-5, 7-5.
