Matt Donald had three break points in the fifth game of his first round match against Lucky Loser Benjamin Pietri in Heraklion, but the Frenchman was able to save all three before going on to hold serve. He couldn’t do that two games later, saving the first two break points from 0-40 before losing the third. With the remaining games going with serve, Donald was able to close out the set after 47 minutes.
Break points came against Pietri in the fifth game of the second set as well, but this time Donald was able to convert the first of them. It was Pietri’s turn to have a chance to break back in the eighth game, taking Donald to 15-40, but the teenager fought back to deuce. There were three of those in the end, with Pietri getting the advantage after each, and he eventually converted at the fifth time of asking. The next two games went with serve, and Pietri twice had a game point in the next before Donald won the three points that he needed to break again. He celebrated by holding to love to serve out the match after an hour and 49 minutes. The final score was 6-4, 7-5. In the second round Donald will play the eighth seed, Mario Gonzalez Fernandez from Spain.
