The first two rounds of qualifying in Oberhaching were both held overnight, with Matt Donald’s opponent in the second round being Jannik Opitz from Germany. Donald won the first four games, although he did have to save a break point in the second after being up 40-0 to start. The remaining games in the first set went with serve, but Donald had to save more break points when he was serving for the set, which lasted 35 minutes.
Donald got the first break in the second set to lead 3-2, and the next three games went with serve to leave Opitz needing to hold to stay in the match. That task proved beyond him as, although he saved the first set point, he couldn’t save the second. The final score was 6-2, 6-3, with the match lasting an hour and three minutes.
In the final round of qualifying tonight Donald will play the 16th seed, 18 year old Filippo Romano from Italy.
