It turned out that only two players entered the women’s ASB Classic wild card play-off, and they were our two top left-handers – Monique Barry and Elyse Tse.  On rankings it should have been a fairly straightforward win for Barry, but it didn’t turn out that way. Tse held serve to start the match, and Barry won her first service game but lost the next two.  She did break Tse’s serve when the latter was trying to close out the set before holding next time round, but Tse held as well to safely serve out the set.

The second and third sets were much more comfortable for Barry, as she didn’t drop another service game and eventually cruised through to win after two hours and 19 minutes.  The final score was 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
